Smoothie vs juice: how to read the menu

Compare preparation, texture and ingredients before ordering.

Start with the preparation

A smoothie blends ingredients together into a drink. Juice is extracted from produce, although a shop may then mix it with other ingredients. Some smoothies use juice as a base. Read the actual preparation description rather than treating the two menu headings as complete ingredient lists.

Decide which texture you want

A blended drink can be thick, smooth or icy depending on its recipe. Juice can be clearer or pulpy. Ask whether a particular item is blended to order and what liquid it uses. A menu photograph is less useful than a description of the drink you will receive.

Compare the complete recipe

Look for fruit, juice, milk or another base, then note any yogurt, sorbet, sweetener or extras. For a useful comparison, use the same serving size and the location’s published information. The words “juice” and “smoothie” alone do not establish nutritional content or suitability for your needs.

Order for the visit you are making

If you want a simple fruit drink, ask which current option matches that preference. If you need a specific ingredient excluded, discuss the recipe and preparation directly with the shop. Confirm substitutions and their charges before the drink is made.
